Alumni Parents’ Coffee

Welcome

Welcome to the Cambridge alumni fellowship known as Friends of Cambridge.

In 2005, Sherry Denton and Patty Smith originated the Friends of Cambridge with the goal of supporting the school’s current and former students and families through meaningful fellowship, communication, prayer, volunteer service and financial support.

This growing group of parents, college students, and college graduates gathers in prayer, enjoys an annual mothers’ fall coffee, and celebrates each December with a Cambridge Alumni and Parents of Alumni Christmas party. We keep in touch with news of weddings, school activities and honors, as well as college, graduate school, and career decisions, and have launched a website and an alumni newsletter. Our dues support these activities, as well as providing for the floral arrangement at Cambridge’s graduation ceremony each year.

We have also been developing a list of parents, college graduates, and college students to network with for career options, summer internships, graduate school, and eventual employment after graduation. In addition, we continue to expand our reach to friends and contacts outside our Cambridge community who desire to join us in supporting the school’s mission and finances.

The structure of the group was set up with a further goal of one day seeing our graduates begin their own alumni group. With the approach of the school’s ten year anniversary,  there has been great alumni collaboration and cooperation in planning our upcoming “Celebrating Ten Years” events. There is more information on the website about all of these exciting events that we look forward to celebrating with you!

We hope you will keep in touch, too, as you travel, pursue interesting internships or employment, move, or have something else to share to encourage your fellow graduates and their families. Please help us keep in touch with you by completing the alumni information form on this site. We would be honored to have you join us,  and, along with our thanks, you will receive an updated Cambridge directory with your contribution of $25/family payable by check or PayPal to Cambridge School of Dallas. Thank you to those of who sent in your dues and have already joined! You can also support Cambridge through Boxtops for Education and the Fund Cambridge While You Shop programs. More information about those programs is available on the website or through Joy Savage at the school.

May the Lord continue to “be thy vision,” and may you continue to enjoy a life-long love of learning and a passion for Jesus Christ,

Warmly in Him,

Your Friends of Cambridge Leadership Team,

Parents’ Alumni Coffee

If you weren’t able to attend the Parents’ Alumni Coffee in October, here’s the scoop from our star reporter Carol Bayless:

There was a lovely mini-brunch, made much more festive by the absence of lighting in the gym! The electricity went out that morning at CSD; however, does that faze Cambridge moms?  No way!  Those host gals whipped out candles, opened the gym doors, and created Alum Ambiance to spare.  (It came back on around 10:30).

Christie Sparks welcomed everyone attending. We were encouraged to join the Friends of Cambridge alumni parents group, which is a $25.00 per year membership (yellow sheet sent with the Coffee invitation). Among other things, FOC assists with alumni events and pays for the gorgeous flowers at Graduation.  The yellow form and check can be mailed to Christie, or left at the school with Joy.

Alecia Jenkins addressed the Development side of CSD.  Highlights:

-         Remember Donor Bridge Day last month?  In ONE day, CSD families (including some alum families) donated $60,000, which will be matched and result in a $120,000 donation to the school.  Woo-hoo!

-         Encouraged us to “Like” Cambridge on Facebook for the latest news.

-         Mentioned the two current CSD endowment funds: 1) The Ryan Family Fund in memory of their daughter, Meg ’07.  This money is used to assist with student scholarships;  2) The Class of 2011 Faculty Fund, which was started by our thoughtful students to benefit our amazing teachers.

-         Faith & Culture returns to Fellowship Bible Church on Thursday, Nov. 10. The speaker is Lynn Vincent “…the most successful writer you’ve never heard of…” She is the co-author of several books, including Same Kind of Different as MeSarah Palin Going Rogue, and Heaven is For Real.  http://www.lynnvincent.com/

CSD’s returning to the pre-F&C Speaker’s Dinner event, and Alecia is selling 20 tables of 8 for $1,000 each.  Over half are already gone, so if you’re interested in sponsoring or getting together a group, contact her at ajenkins@cambridgedallas.org.  The F&C event itself is free, as usual.  Joy has the F&C event postcards, if you want to mail or post them.

Leslie gave updates on the “Celebrate 10 Years” team, encouraging us to mark December 28 (Sports Event at CSD) and 29 (Evening Par-tay at ‘Off the Grid’ in downtown Dallas) on the calendar.  (You may purchase your tickets here.) Also, make sure our students have done the same, along with filling out the alumni survey which was emailed to them recently.  (If they’re having trouble accessing the survey, LJ can arrange to have it re-sent.)  It’s going to be an uber-special year, thanks to the team’s hard work.  Plan to attend Declamation and Tutorial finals, Class Night and Graduation!

Dr. Wolfe gave updates on the ongoing search for a future CSD facility. The committee has committed the NW quadrant of Dallas “within the Loop”.  They have decided NOT to buy raw land and build.  The remaining three facilities being focused on are: 1) a current school, 2) a church facility, or 3) an office building.

He mentioned that there is a very positive spirit this year regarding the past, present and future of Cambridge.

Lauren Johnson ’03 (new College Counselor/Registrar) spoke about the joys and benefits of a CSD education.  She attended Wake Forest, then Reformed Theological seminary.  CSD prepares our students to:

-         Work hard
-         Not be intimidated by worldviews
-         Look for good friends
-         Not be afraid to take difficult classes (sometimes for fun!)
-         Have social comfort and sense of community outside our families
-         Have a strong sense of their capabilities
-         Know that God’s providence will use them wherever they go to school or end up in life.
